Clinic-Based OT for 0-3 Child Development: How we support Early Intervention

"Trust your gut." It's one of the most common pieces of advice given to new parents, but it can be frustrating when your gut tells you your child needs support and the system tells you to wait, or that there is nothing more to be done. Despite these barriers, no one knows your child better than you, and that parental instinct should be listened to.

When parents suspect a developmental delay, early feeding difficulties, or sensory challenges in the 0–3 age window, their first step is often looking into state-funded Early Intervention (EI) programs. Early Intervention does amazing work and is an incredible resource, but because they rely on specific percentage delays qualify children, many kids with real, everyday challenges fall into a grey area. EI isn't designed to catch every single child who could benefit from extra support and the structure of the program isn't necessarily the best fit for every child. Whether your child is currently enrolled in EI and you’re looking for supplemental support, or you're wondering what comes next after a discharge that didn't feel totally resolute, private clinic-based Occupational Therapy (OT) is here to help.

Why Families Seek Clinic-Based OT During the 0–3 Years

Every child develops on their own timeline, but when challenges arise, families usually run into one of three common scenarios:

  1. They want collaboration of EI & Specialized Clinic OT: Many families actively receiving EI find that there simply isn't enough time in a treatment plan to address the amount and impact of concerns. When families want both home and community support in addition to a more focused look at sensory processing, oral-motor mechanics, or nervous system development, collaboration between EI and clinic-OT can be a great option.

  2. They didn't qualify for state services: EI programs typically operate under strict percentage-based delays. A child can have real, daily difficulties with motor skills, feeding, or emotional regulation, yet still score just above the state threshold to receive care. In the clinic, we can focus on quality of movement and milestones, not just achievement.

  3. They discharged, but concerns remain: A child graduating from EI can be a great accomplishment! Unfortunately, sometimes that milestone is met with apprehension, rather than reassurance. When a family is worried about what the absence of support will do for their child's development, or have lingering concerns after discharge, we're here to help.

  4. They are sitting on a waiting list: Navigating state evaluations and scheduling can take time. During a period of such rapid brain development, private clinic OT allows you to take action right away rather than waiting months for care.

A Quick Note on Who We Are: Private clinic-based Occupational Therapy is not a replacement for state Early Intervention programs, nor are we affiliated with state EI. EI remains a valuable resource with expert professionals who are qualified to care for your child. We're here to supplement, continue, or fill in the care gaps when your family needs deeper support.

How Clinic-Based OT Helps 0–3 Development Alongside Early Intervention

  • Foundational Motor Development: We look closely at posture, core strength, balance, and hand-eye coordination. Whether it's learning to grasp a spoon, push up onto hands and knees, or coordinate two hands together during play, we build the underlying physical mechanics.

  • Sensory Integration & Regulation: Early childhood is filled with new textures, sounds, environments, and more. If your child gets easily overwhelmed by sights/sounds, struggles with transitions, or avoids certain sensory experiences, we help them process sensory input safely so they feel secure and safe in their body.

  • Feeding & Oral-Motor Skills: Feeding is one of the most complex tasks a baby or toddler learns. From transitioning to solids to handling different textures or cup drinking, OT provides gentle, play-based feeding support. We address the coordination and quality of movement in the body in mouth, to ensure your child feels safe and supported at the start of their feeding journey.

  • Continuity & Carryover: Clinic OT doesn't have a hard end date. We are able to support your child throughout their early years, transition to school, and beyond as needed. Supporting families through all of life's big transitions and offering tailored home programming along the way is instrumental to a strong foundation for development.

What to Expect in a Clinic Environment

Mr. Rogers says it best. "Play is really the work of childhood." Our clinic is designed with that in mind. Everything in our clinic is a tool chosen to help your child build confidence and skills, all while having fun. We have specialized sensory equipment, swings, crash pads, trampolines, and more, all designed to meet your child where they're at.

You don't need a formal diagnosis or a long list of concerns to seek support. If you have a feeling that your child is struggling, that instinct alone is enough to start a conversation.
